Welfare Coach Case Study

SOAR's Welfare Coaches offer independent support, advice and guidance on a variety of issues, including housing, finances and family welfare.

A client who had been supported by our Employment Team was referred within the SOAR team to Carl, one of our Welfare Coaches, for benefits advice.

The client's finances were failing due to her husband being off work due to ill health. His mobility is very poor, and surgical interventions have been delayed because of Covid-19.

Her husband was dismissed on the grounds of capability, although the client was content with the financial settlement that her husband received in consequence of this.

Carl discussed numerous benefits awards with the client, such as:

  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - guidance was given surrounding the claims process

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - general advice was given in respect of the claims process, and the claim was successful

  • Carer's Allowance - this claim was also successful, and the client will receive an allowance each week

As a result of SOAR's involvement, the client's income has improved by £265 per week, and the client has reported that her own wellbeing has also improved in consequence of this.

The client was kind enough to write to SOAR's Partnership Manager with praise for Carl and Annie who had previously given employment support.

"Thank you for helping me to sort these benefits out, Carl… I really cannot thank you enough."
