This Girl Can - Charlotte’s 10k Success

Charlotte is a go-getter who’s life motto is just give it a go. Charlotte started her journey with SOAR by joining the Walking for Purpose group and has recently completed her second Sheffield 10K run. Read on to find out how she became the bone fide runner she is now.

I joined the Walking for Purpose group back in 2018, after my other half told me about it. At the time I was trying to keep fit but wasn’t exercising enough to see any improvements. I really didn’t know what to expect from the first session, but I thought I’d give it a go and I felt so much better afterwards!

After the first Walking for Purpose session, I started working with Julie Moore (Senior Health Trainer) and we spent time talking through health plans, including exercise and diet. I also started participating in the golf group and exercising made me feel amazing. As well as the Walking for Purpose and Golf group, I am a member of Burton Street’s ‘Under the Stars’ which is a charity for people with learning disabilities. I was asked by someone from the group if I wanted to start running and take part in the Sheffield 10K. Again, I didn’t know what to expect, but I thought I’d give it a go.

Fast forward 1 year and I’ve now got 2 Sheffield 10K medals. I love running and am proud to run with ‘Under the Stars’. Sometimes you have to just give things a go, even if you’re not sure what to expect. I really enjoy exercising and feel like I can be a role model for others and prove that I can do things regardless of my learning disabilities. I’d like to thank Julie from SOAR for motivating me and Julia from ‘Under the Stars’ for asking me to take part in the 10K. I can’t wait for my next 10k run and my jelly leg feeling.
