Talking about the Menopause

Do you want to find out more about the Menopause? Julie, one of our Wellbeing Coaches and SOAR's Menopause Advocate, has put together a blog post all about it. Read on to find out more.

You will have heard the word ‘Menopause’ - it is in the news, on the radio, in many articles you read. Thank goodness women everywhere are now talking about it! Women from generations before us have struggled through it, but thanks to many high profile celebrities such as Davina McCall (Davina McCall: Sex, Mind and the Menopause - All 4 (channel4.com)) we can now look at this in a positive light & ask for help; this change is very welcome.

The Menopause is a completely normal event that 50% of the population will go through!

  • Perimenopause is the years leading up to the Menopause,

  • Menopause is when the ovaries completely stop producing reproductive hormones and there are no monthly periods for consecutive twelve months,

  • Post Menopause is the several years afterwards.

The Menopause can be overwhelming and confusing, there is no ‘one size fits all’. There is still a way to go but now we are talking about it, there is so much more to do.

Today it is World Menopause Day (18th October 2022)! Here at SOAR there will be a celebration of events taking place throughout the day, supporting our staff to understand the Perimenopause, Menopause and Post Menopause. This includes a presentation, with fun dance activities, Pilates & a mindfulness walk. This is not just for women going through the journey but for younger women to learn and be prepared for when it is their turn, also for men to be able to support their partners, wives, work colleagues, sisters.

I have been trained as a ‘Menopause Advocate’ with 43 others that work with Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust. I am now able to pass on my knowledge I have learnt about the Menopause to anyone that wants to know more.

To learn more about different Menopause treatments, you can visit this NHS webpage or speak to your GP.

Meno Fest 2022

On the 8th October I volunteered at the first Meno Fest in Sheffield at the SUFC ground, where throughout the day 600 women & a few men (amazing to see!) took part in talks, meno chats, presentations, massage, reflexology, dance mob and lots of information stalls with tons of free goodies.

It was an amazing day! Women from across South Yorkshire working in the NHS attended the day, they wanted to know more. Many women were worried about being able to carry on working because the Menopause symptoms were making them doubt themselves and lose confidence - women were asking whether they should take early retirement.

Hopefully these amazing women doing amazing roles could get the answers they needed from the day such as: what are the symptoms, what is HRT, why have I got no memory anymore, does anyone else have brain fog, does anyone else not sleep, why have I got so many aches and pains and so many more questions...

From attending the many talks women were empowered & confident to make an appointment with their GP and ask for HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) to treat their symptoms.
