Dwayne used to work as a Data Engineer, laying cables for telecommunications. In 2020 he fell from a height which resulted in damage to his back and hip meaning he can no longer return to his former job and do the physically demanding work. Unemployed and finding himself on the DWP Restart programme things became stressful, taking a toll on his mental health.
Returning to work was the focus but Dwayne felt a little out of touch as to what we could do. He had been giving some thought to becoming a Youth Worker. With this in mind, together we set out an action plan, looking at how we could support him with achieving this. Our meetings focused on course options and funding enquiries, completing training & bursary application forms, preparing for course interviews, and ongoing support to secure a placement/volunteer work.
He completed the ‘Introduction to Youth Works' course in April, followed by the approval of NYAA bursary funding to start the Level 2 Youth Work qualification in May.
Dwayne says: "I have received great support from my advisor, she has helped and supported me to get onto the Youth Work course which is amazing as I’ve always wanted to do it. I appreciate all the help with finding opportunities, helping with forms, and finding work experience placements. Many thanks to my advisor, I’m moving forward with something that motivates me and I’m really interested in."
