Burngreave Library Volunteer Case Study

Burngreave Library wouldn't be what it is today without the fantastic team of volunteers based there. Volunteering is a great way of not only building your own skills but also helping your local community. Read on to hear from Paul, one of our library volunteers:

"I started working at Burngreave Library in December 2023 having seen a poster asking for volunteers. Having completed my degree course and unemployed, I was unsure of my next steps. I applied for the position as I had already had thoughts of starting a career in library work and I thought this would be a logical step. In addition, it provided me with the opportunity to work within the community.

The staff at SOAR are friendly with a diverse knowledge base. The professionalism shown to staff and customers has been exemplary. The experience I have attained while volunteering for SOAR has opened up new opportunities and has given me the confidence to move forward with my future. A large portion of my renewed self-esteem and confidence is due to the impact of everyone I have worked alongside at Burngreave Library.

I have now entered employment, but I would not hesitate to provide my services as a volunteer should the opportunity arise. I do not know what the future will be bring, but I feel more confident in pushing forward.

The SOAR staff at Sorby House have been friends, mentors and companions on my journey, and I will miss them."
