Volunteering Matters

Everyone in the UK should have the opportunity to thrive. So, we bring people together to overcome some of society’s most complex issues through the power of volunteering. We partner with communities to overcome adversity, tackling social isolation and loneliness, improving health, developing skills and opportunity and making sure young people can lead change.

The Sheffield Sporting Chance Project previously focused on men only aged 50yrs and older, but we now offer opportunities for all adults who may be socially isolated. We run a weekly quiz on zoom, pen pals letter writing service and telephone befriending. If you or anyone you know would like to receive our free services, please contact Mark Hible.

We are also recruiting and training more volunteers to expand our delivery.

Business Development Coordinator – Rose Batty

As Business Development Coordinator, I’m lucky to get to work with some incredible Community Partners & all the teams at SOAR. My role is broken down into 3 parts: marketing, social impact reporting & project management. I’m most excited this year about launching our Social Accounts (coming soon), developing our social impact reports & working with Voluntary Action Sheffield to develop a Sheffield VCS Marketing & Comms Network!

Parson Cross Community Development Forum

Louise Ashmore – Project Co-ordinator, Louise Askew – Development Worker and Administrator, Simon Lucas – Chef and Events Worker

Parson Cross Forum run a community centre based on Margetson Crescent in Parson Cross. We deliver a wide variety of projects for the whole community, including 3 Memory Cafes per week, a late-stage Dementia project JABADAO, 2 weekly Lunch Clubs, IT classes, exercise classes, Community Bingo, a Singing Group, and a Men’s Talk Group.

Our work has changed significantly over the past 9 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our building is currently closed, but we have significantly adapted the way we work to ensure we are continuing to meet the needs of our community. This now includes delivering groups online via Zoom, making regular weekly telephone calls to our members, and face-to-face (safe distance) doorstep visits once a month to over 60 of our most vulnerable members.

Centres Manager – Ellen Summers

My role as SOAR Centres Manager is very challenging but extremely rewarding. SOAR has an estate of 10 properties including SOAR Works Enterprise Centre and the management of Longley 4G Ltd. My amazing team of 5 Centres staff work hard to ensure that our spaces are safe and welcoming, with the highest level of customer service and attention to detail. In the last few months we have worked hard to ensure that our buildings are Covid-secure and achieved 100% occupancy. We listen and support our tenants to grow their businesses to benefit the wider community. The thing I value most about SOAR is working in a helpful, friendly community.
