High Green residents celebrate Yorkshire Day

Every year, to celebrate Yorkshire Day on August 1, High Green local residents and groups hold a community celebration day at the Miners Welfare in High Green.

A selection of stalls – ranging from local history groups to Tai Chi and Sword Dancing groups – took part as well as representation from local pharmacies, PCSOs and the local Advice Centre.

The day was launched with the reading of the Yorkshire declaration (an oath of a Yorkshire person committing themselves to Yorkshire!) and a collection of singers, called High Spirits (pictured) and including the Lady Lord Mayor, giving a rousing rendition of ‘On Ilkley Moor Bah Tat’.

The event reached over 120 local people and helped to create a bit of Yorkshire magic in a local community.

One local resident later sent an email saying: “There were a few highlights. One was when the Lord Mayor met Gina who teaches the Tai Chi, and with her was her oldest student who was around 94 years old! It was special.”

Preparations for making next year’s event bigger and better are already in hand… watch this space!
