Diabetes Course provides life-changing help
SOAR Health Trainer Naheen Mohammed attended the recent BME Desmond Course, which stands for Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed.
Here, she reports back on the course and the impact it is having on people’s lives.
“I attended the BME Desmond diabetes course, where it was my responsibility to recruit and promote the course. I attended the full six weeks and worked alongside the diabetes nurse in delivering the course content, using my Bilingual skills it really helped participants understand and grasp the course.
“The client’s content included how to self-manage their condition through healthy eating and exercise. We also demonstrated how they can manage their blood sugar levels, and had discussions about natural sugars in food and carbs, portion sizes and how important it is to take medication on time.
“The Desmond course was a success in Burngreave. The clients learnt how to manage their diabetes on a daily basis, without having to make regular trips to the GP/Diabetes nurse, they feel like they are now more in control in of their condition.
“I am now in the process of organising a second group due to start 6th March at Sorby House.”
