Bags of Taste’s FREE mentored cooking courses

Bags of Taste’s FREE mentored cooking courses are back!

We currently have limited spaces left for September courses and lots of places available for October courses. The course is open to Sheffield residents – all you need to take part is a kitchen with basic equipment and a phone.

Our courses help people to gain the skills they need to cook healthy food on a small budget. Our funders are particularly keen to help people who are unemployed, on benefits or struggling with food costs.

About the course

On registration, we deliver a free bag of ingredients sufficient to cook 7 portions at home. We provide personal mentoring via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, email or phone to teach students useful cooking skills based around 3 simple recipes that allow for a lot of variation and can be made for less than £1 a portion.

Groups are kept small to enable students to form supportive relationships with each other, while the mentor can offer emotional support and befriending, if the student doesn’t have access to the internet we can provide one-to-one mentoring over the phone. On finishing the 2-week course, we provide online or offline resources to further students’ development and learning.

How to register

We take referrals and self-referrals via email sheffield@bagsoftaste.org, alternatively text or call 07757393758.

Our last course in Sheffield had an 85% graduation rate, 96% of people who finished the course said they felt more confident cooking from scratch and 92% said they would cook more after the course!

Here is some feedback from students who have taken part –

‘I would tell anyone to give it a try. It is good for your health and absolutely fab for your mental health gives you something to focus on. The recipes are great and can do them to your own personal choice it really is a great course I would say to people give it a try, if I can do it anyone can as I’m not the best cook and it taught me recipes that are quick and easy’

‘I cooked a curry the other day and made the rice myself and it turned out perfectly, I couldn’t make rice before and used to buy the pouches, I bought this value pack of rice for 40p, I love the fact that you get the ingredients, really nice, recipes clear and easy to follow, I love the knife sharpener, it was really good to see pictures of the meals other people had made, it made me want to cook it and to chat in the group’

‘Thank you for your help and for giving me the confidence in trying this’
