A Better Life

March 2019

A Better Life run a fortnightly social group for women aged over 50. In these sessions, participants enjoy cooking and eating lunch together, and a range of activities from exercise sessions to informal English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. A Better Life has also been able to provide participants with specific support around finances, such as advice from Citizen’s Advice Workers, Energy Saving services, and from PWLC who have been able to help with Bus Pass applications.

The activities funding received from Age Better has helped with room hire, which has been greatly appreciated by group attendees, as it has enabled them to stay involved in social activity which they otherwise wouldn’t be able to access at a cost.  Age Better Start Up funding from Ignite Imaginations has also enabled the group members to organise trips further afield and explore new towns and activities.

Khatab (Citizen’s Advice Sheffield) regularly attends the group to support attendees with benefits queries.

5 clients have benefited from this so far, with many more of the ladies interested in receiving support in future.

Liz also attended the group on several occasions.  She has 8 clients with saving money on their energy bill, and also helped one client reduce her debt with the support from Khatab.

This dual working proved a success.  The attendees appreciated both Khatab and Liz coming to the session as made it more accessible for them to receive the support the needed.

Participant Quotes

“I really appreciated the support received from Liz and Khatab regarding my electricity bill which was in arrears.  With their support the bill was reduced.”

“Being introduced to an advice worker in the session has allowed me check what benefits I may be entitled to.  I would not have accessed this service if it was not for the advice worker attending our group.”

Volunteer Quotes

“Being able to go on trips to Rotherham Market, Bradford and Birmingham using grant funding has created such a nice feeling in the group, and has allowed us as volunteers to have a break from our normal hosting and cooking role within the group.  For most of our attendees, being able to go these places would be difficult due to finances and being isolated. Thank you for giving us these opportunities.”
