SOAR volunteers honoured at Shiregreen Awards

SOAR volunteers Margaret Gardiner and Margaret Heathcote received an award for their work in improving people’s health at the Shiregreen Awards Ceremony recently.

The pair – who both turned to volunteering with SOAR after receiving help from the charity – attended the event at the Leopold Hotel along with one of the clients from Shiregreen Social Café, Des, and their guests.

New Scheme aims to make Better Journeys for the elderly

As you get older, getting out and about becomes more challenging, especially when you might not be used to finding your way around the public transport system.

This is where the Better Journeys project comes in handy. It’s a new scheme for people aged over 50 in the Firth Park area, and aims to help reduce social isolation by making it easier to understand and use the public transport network.

Women for Peace – a FREE course in Sheffield

Women for Peace is a free course being held at Firvale Community Hub for women in Sheffield to explore conflict and peace.

It starts on Friday, 8 March, and runs for nine weeks with a break for the Easter holidays.

It’s an interactive leadership programme for women exploring conflict and extremism at a local, national and international level.

Diabetes Course provides life-changing help

SOAR Health Trainer Naheen Mohammed attended the recent BME Desmond Course, which stands for Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed.

Here, she reports back on the course and the impact it is having on people’s lives.

“I attended the BME Desmond diabetes course, where it was my responsibility to recruit and promote the course. I attended the full six weeks and worked alongside the diabetes nurse in delivering the course content, using my Bilingual skills it really helped participants understand and grasp the course.

Celebrate International Women’s Day!

SOAR is inviting women to come together and celebrate International Women’s Day!

Last year’s event was a great success, so we’re hoping for a repeat of the event in 2019 on Wednesday, 13 March from 10am-2pm.

Women and children are invited to come along to Verdon Recreation Centre on Verdon Street, S3 9QS to mark International Women’s Day.

Firth Park Library closure extended

Firth Park Library has been closed for a while now, and although it is nearly ready to re-open, it has become necessary to extend the closure just a little.

The building improvements and redecoration will now continue until Monday, 1 April, when it will open at 10am.

You can continue to return any library books to the post box at the Sure Start Centre.

Firvale Community Hub Open Day

Firvale Community Hub is a great organisation – and next Wednesday, 6 March, they’re having an open day so you can find out more!

Come along and meet the team, and find out about the courses they run. They hold courses from Childcare to customer services, business administration to team leading, adult social care and more.

The open day is on Wednesday, 6 March, from 10am until 12.30pm at Firvale Community Hub, 127 Page Hall Road, Sheffield, S4 8GU.

Transport available to Day Care Centre

Residents of North Sheffield who are living with dementia are being encouraged to take advantage of free transport which is being offered to day care centres in Hillsborough.

Care2Care provide day care services at Westbourne House and Burton Street in Hillsborough, and have places available funded by the city council.

The sessions offer stimulating activities, personal care and socialisation in a safe and modern care setting for people who meet their eligibility criteria.

Cancer Awareness Event in Pitsmoor

Cancer is one of the biggest challenges we face in society today, and we can all play our part in helping to stay healthy and well.

Pitsmoor Medical Centre is hosting a Cancer Awareness Event on Thursday, 7 march, presented by SOAR and the Be Cancer Safe project.

Come along from 2-3pm for a cuppa and an informal chat about keeping healthy and staying well, from healthy eating and living to attending breast screening sessions.
