Vision for Our City – One Year On

One year has passed since the Sheffield Social Leaders Network joined forces and worked up its vision for the city: a city where everyone has an equal chance to lead a fulfilling life, everyone shares the benefits of economic growth, and everyone feels they can influence what happens in their life and their community. SOAR’s Partnership Manager, Ian Drayton, has reacted to the most recent update which gives insight into the 6 key areas and challenges for moving forward.

A Better Life

March 2019

A Better Life run a fortnightly social group for women aged over 50. In these sessions, participants enjoy cooking and eating lunch together, and a range of activities from exercise sessions to informal English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. A Better Life has also been able to provide participants with specific support around finances, such as advice from Citizen’s Advice Workers, Energy Saving services, and from PWLC who have been able to help with Bus Pass applications.

Ayishah’s Story – A Better Life

March 2019

Ayishah had been widowed, which had left her feeling isolated and with a lot of anxiety about her finances and how she would cope without an income. Ayishah’s GP referred her to SOAR’s Health Trainer services to help her with her confidence surrounding these issues.

Ayishah was soon referred to A Better Life, where a Citizens Advice worker (Khatab) was able to help her to claim for PIP and Pension Credit.  The claims were successful, and Ayishah is now £90 per week better off due to her newly instated pension credit, and feels much less anxious now that she has more financial security.
