Healthy Holidays 2020

Thanks to significant funding from the Department for Education, a Healthy Holiday programme is being delivered across Sheffield to support thousands of families during the summer holidays. In North East Sheffield alone, there are close to 20 organisations preparing healthy activities and meals in a COVID secure environment.

Organisations across North East Sheffield have been running holiday activities for a couple of years now. It’s an opportunity for young people and parents/carers to spend time with others in a safe and friendly space. Activities in the past have included sports, arts, drama, baking and much more. One Nana of 2 girls that attended last year’s activities said “The girls loved the Circus skills & have tried new activities they’ve never tried before. It was lovely to see them playing with other children from the area. It was also really nice to sit down with other families to have a community meal & it was appreciated when we could take food home afterwards.”

Volunteers needed!

Over the summer, the Healthy Holidays programme led by Voluntary Action Sheffield will co-ordinate the preparation and distribution of 1500 healthy food hampers to families in North East Sheffield.

We are looking for volunteers who are available to do shifts of 3.5 hours (9.30-1pm and 1.30-5pm) on Mondays and Tuesdays in August to prepare the hampers at our collation centre in Firth Park.

Burngreave Library – Working hard to welcome you back soon

Burngreave Library staff and volunteers have missed you and we are working hard to reopen as soon and as safely as we can. This will be in phases over the next few months as we open our services to the public again.

We are working with Sheffield libraries to re-organise the library and put in social distancing measures so that everyone should be safe when the library opens. This is an important part of re-opening, with safety being our number one priority.

The Fir Vale Food Bank Team Through COVID-19

I think it is Monday 15 June 2020. Days and dates have lost all meaning and the new normal is still taking some getting used to. If the sun wasn’t shining through my kitchen door as I type away, it could easily be Christmas already and I would be none the wiser. The last three months have passed me by in a blur.

SCID moved our offices to Fir Vale Community Hub on 17 March and after only a week of settling in and getting my desk just right, BOOM! Lockdown. Everything changed, we were working from home and I was tasked by Colin Havard to ensure Fir Vale Food Bank (where I volunteer on my days off) stayed in operation. This is our story.

Move More Month 2020 Inspiration

SOAR have continued to support clients throughout the Covid19 lockdown, albeit whilst working from home! We caught up with Bev (Health Trainer) to find out how she’s been supporting clients & how one of them is championing Move More Month!

“I’ve been working with a client who was referred to Health Trainer 1-2-1 for exercise. This has been a totally different way of working with clients due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions! The client as a heart condition but really wanted to exercise, the client had spoken to the cardiologist who was really supportive of gentle exercise with a Health Trainer support.

NHS Health Coaching

Supporting patient self-care and self-management is a key priority for the NHS and providing training and support for staff in the use of coaching skills is increasingly seen as one way in which this can be achieved. Health coaching helps people gain and use the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to become active participants in their care so that they can reach their self-identified health and wellbeing goals.

Exciting New Employment Programmes

The Employment Team support people into learning, training & employment. Since the start of Covid19 lockdown, the teams focus has been to help support the Covid19 response. However, with 3 new programmes, including Building Blocks, Lead Key Worker & Targeted Key Worker, the team are excited to support getting people into employment more than ever before!
